Does your FD have a wear-test strategy? It should.

By Lt. Eric Stueve Central Pierce Fire & Rescue The importance of an open, unbiased, objective-based, wear test cannot be overstated. If the responsibility is yours to choose PPE (personal protective equipment), you have an ethical obligation to insure you are issuing optimal solutions. PPE is a risk control measure: potentially the last barrier between insult and injury. This consideration coupled with your stewardship of public monies requires you to regularly evaluate what you are buying and why. The principles of this editorial apply to selecting all PPE, but for the sake of brevity, we’ll focus exclusively on turnouts designed…

Custom LION turnouts help Georgia firefighter return to action after cancer battle

By Tiffany Stevens Ledger-Enquirer After six and half years, Lt. Gene Hull can finally enter a burning building again. Hull, a firefighter of 31 years with the Columbus (Georgia) Fire Department, was diagnosed with Synovial sarcoma in 2006, a rare form of joint cancer that wrapped itself around Hull’s collarbone and shoulder and forced doctors to amputate his right arm and take out some of his right ribcage. “The doctor’s told me to go ahead and amputate and get all the cancer or we could do surgery and I would just have a limb hanging there,” he said. Most fire departments in such…

LION Manufacturing Town Devastated by Tornado

As many of you saw on news reports this past weekend, the town of West Liberty, Ky. took a direct hit and was devastated by a tornado. LION’s turnout gear and chem-bio garment manufacturing plant is located in West Liberty, and our distribution center is located in nearby Hazel Green, Ky.  Given the extreme devastation this town endured – the tornado essentially wiped out the entire downtown – we are relieved to report that at this time we have no reports of LION employees with critical injuries. We are aware that some employees have injured family members and badly damaged or destroyed…

9/11 rememberance

By STEVE SCHWARTZ Message from LION CEO This Sunday marks ten years since 9/11. It’s a time for remembrance. Nearly 3,000 people were murdered. Each loss creates an unfillable void for family, friends, our fire service and first responder community, and the nation. It’s a time for reflection. Right after 9/11, as a country, we stood as one. That sense of oneness has looked and felt increasingly fragile over the past two years of economic and political turmoil in our country. It’s a time for renewed solidarity: to recommit ourselves to a belief in that oneness that we felt so strongly 10 years ago. The challenges…

Proper training, equipment key to responder readiness

Situational awareness. Evolving threats. Mission specific. Readiness. These are all terms with which first responders are all very familiar. Whether it be recent events such as potential backlash from the death of Osama bin Laden, a high-profile sporting event, dignitary visit or an unknown chemical threat, it is critical that today’s first responders are ready to respond when duty calls. Key criteria in being ready? Being properly trained and having the right equipment to do what the mission is asking of you. Check out this short video clip from KSTP Channel 5 Eyewitness News out of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area…

Who should respond to 911 calls?

Who should be responding to 911 calls? This is a topic recently discussed in an article on MSNBC titled “Firefighters face new threat: private 911 service.” In a growing nationwide trend, private ambulance service providers are marketing to cash-strapped cities to take over services historically provided by the local jurisdictions’ fire departments. And emergency ambulance calls make up a large portion of the calls to which firefighters respond. While the two groups are already working together in many instances, experts have varying views and opinions on whether for-profit providers put the public – and the jobs of the public servants hired…
