IABTI Annual Training Conference

The 38th Annual International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators In-Service Training Conference & Expo begins June 13 and continues through June 18 in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The IABTI website best summarized its members:

We are the cop on the corner, the firefighter with the smoke-smudged face, the soldier doing humanitarian de-mining, the analyst who examines the pieces of the puzzle and the WMD specialist determining the potential threat posed by our adversaries. We’re also the people who are called upon to eliminate that threat, and we do it every day.

Part of this year’s event will commemorate Monsignor Heaney (1928-2010), who became a member of the IABTI on June 15, 1974. From the IABTI site:

“Because of the Monsignor’s strong commitment to the law enforcement community, he was appointed IABTI Chaplin, a position he held for more than 30 years. His dedicated service as Chaplin of the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators has been an enormous asset to our organization and its members. His impeccable credentials and law enforcement qualifications are worthy of recognition. Monsignor Heaney’s actions, deeds and professional assistance to the IABTI are highly regarded throughout the world.

He was a Charter Member who had been awarded the Distinguished Service Award as well as the IABTI’s most prestigous award, the Roger Goad Memorial Award.

IABTI’s Chaplain Emeritus John P. Heaney passed away at about 0530 hours Pacific time on Friday, January 29, 2010. He died at Nazareth House in San Rafael, CA.”
